Time for Water - Time for water

A prototype for a European ResidenZ program

Welcome to our magazine about "Time for Water"

What is time for the future and how can we make it possible in land use? This question has occupied us in the last two years with three different approaches. In 2023, our "Time for Future - Prototype Program" is dedicated to the topic of water. "Time for Water". Based on the artist residenZen/artist in residency, we have adopted the logic of "creating free spaces" for ecosystems in a specific location. Our ResidenZ Water dealt with the topic of water for two to four months in dialog and exchange with Portugal. This project is the follow-up to the pilot in 2021 ResidenZukunft and the second project on the topic of Erasmus + project "Time for Future". All three projects interact strongly with the Weltacker project. So there were also synergies in this prototype 2023 with a parallel exchange project to the world acre construction in Odemira, Portugal.
Have fun discovering!

Water, connects all life.

World field and residence Water theme

This season's Weltacker theme, "Drought and water", was addressed with new educational stations on our field tours. In addition, on July 10, we held an expert exchange entitled "Water-rich in the future despite drought?" at the Weltacker Haus, to which we invited land users from the region. Initial awareness-raising took place during the cross-stakeholder landscape walk in November 2022. After a presentation by the head of the Drought Monitor, Dr. Marx from the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research, different perspectives became apparent in a round table discussion, but all participants agreed that solutions must be found for the various challenges that await us. The ResidenZ program, which is also dedicated to the topic of water, was also presented at the Weltacker opening.

Following a call for tenders in the region of Odemira, Portugal, with our partner Jardim do Mira and our region, four candidates were found.

Funding opportunities, potential partners and locations were identified, creating the basis for a future program. Below we present the candidates and the progress and results of the ResidenZ - Time for water prototype.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any suggestions or questions.

Reuse water! - A gray water filter system

As water is a fundamental resource for life, it is particularly close to my heart. As a participant, I hope to better understand the complexities of water management, conservation and access in different regions. By working with local communities and experts in the field, I hope to gain a comprehensive understanding of the various challenges and solutions related to water sustainability.
This program gives me the opportunity to immerse myself in the field and experience first-hand the impact of water scarcity, pollution and inadequate infrastructure on communities. Through these experiences, I hope to develop a broader perspective and sharpen my problem-solving skills to contribute to positive change in the future.

In my own experience, installing a graywater filtration system has been both environmentally friendly and cost effective. Firstly, it relieves the pressure on the municipal water supply as I can reuse the water for irrigation. This not only conserves freshwater resources, but also allows me to grow a food forestry system (agroforestry system).

The filter system itself works by separating solid particles, such as food residues, through a series of filters. The water is then treated through processes such as sedimentation, biological decomposition and disinfection. In this way, harmful bacteria and chemicals are removed, making the water suitable for uses other than drinking water. In addition, thanks to the flexibility of the system, I can choose which fixtures and appliances contribute to the gray water supply. This control over the sources of the gray water gives me more control over the quality of the treated water.

It is important to note that graywater filtration systems require regular maintenance. However, I have developed a system that works smoothly and ensures the longevity of the system components with minimal maintenance by incorporating part of the vermicomposter (the use of earthworms to convert organic waste into fertilizer).

Knowing that I am contributing less to water scarcity and pollution gives me a sense of satisfaction and responsibility towards the planet we all share.

ResidenZ Hydrophyisis

Sophia Katharina Regner

Hydrophysis - at the level of knowledge

A photographic staging of the use of fresh water,
at a time when planetary boundaries are being transgressed.

The effects and consequences of climate change can be seen in the drought and, as a result, in the shortage of fresh water. The study "Global Assessment Report on Disaster Risk Reduction", in particular the "Special Report on Drought 2021" by the Stockholm Resilience Centre with the participation of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), shows that the freshwater problem is a growing challenge worldwide and that the planetary limit of freshwater has already been exceeded.
limit of freshwater has already been exceeded.

The series "Hydrophysis - at the level of knowledge" deals with the question of how we deal (physis) with our fresh water (hydro). How do we deal with our water in
when there is little or no water left? The view is directed towards the future and documents this in the form of a conscious staging, which is inspired by the stylistic element of the tableau vivant, the living painting.
The bachelor thesis consists of seven short films. All of which are made from a single image
single image.

Two further photographs were taken between August and September 2023 as part of the residency project ́s "time for water- time for future", by the RCE-Stettiner Haff, Competence Center for
Education and Sustainable Development under the auspices of Bines e.V. A picture that was created in Portugal will be completed and shown at a later date. I would like to continue my work with Hydrophysis and am happy to have partners and supporters who make this work possible for me.

Sophia Katharina Regner wants to keep going. The Hydrophysis and thus her staging of social challenges in dealing with water will continue. During her ResidenZ time, she collected various stories that she would like to stage, for example on the subject of moorland. Interested? Contact.

ResidenZ "the circle"

Lisa Wendelborn and Thomas Bendt

The water of us all - "The circle" a piece of music about water

We are Lisa and Thomas, freelance artists and live in beautiful Rothenklempenow. Surrounded by lakes, forests and organic farming.
Together we produced the piece of music
*The Circle* and wrote our musical story on the topic
*Our all water*.

Through a mix of near-field recordings of mainly water in various forms (household sounds such as kettles, dripping, etc.; natural sounds from Rothenklempenow such as thunderstorms, rain, etc.) and synthesizers and drums played over the element of water, which is made possible by the MIDI controller *Playtronica*. This can be used to transfer a wide variety of electronic instruments to conductive objects or water, which can then be used like a "keyboard".
This exciting mix enabled us to create a very intuitive workflow and delve deep into the subject of "water".

The majority of all existing sounds were created from water. For example at the castle lake, in the rain in the forest, wind and thunderstorms in Rothenklempenow.
Sound recordings, such as crunching plastic bottles, cans hissing - mixed with beach noises of happy bathers are part of our piece and unfortunately also belong closely together in reality.

With this musical journey we want to give you the opportunity to awaken an intuitive awareness of *all our water* and have therefore tried to reflect the immeasurable importance of this substance for all life in our production. The sounds of water surround us in different forms and waves throughout the piece. Not only does it surround us all the time, we are all water to about 70%!

We invite you to dive in and find new ways to keep our Circle pure and valued together. Water is an element that connects us all.
You can also listen to the whole thing again at home, preferably immerse yourself deeply on headphones, you will find the link below.

Thomas and Lisa want to continue. They have been approached by an artist who works with Nabu. Connecting people with Playtronica and Touchme via workshops, offering music workshops with children and young people and creating more music themselves with the sounds of nature. These are the keywords that came up during the final discussion.

The results of the ResidenZlers

David Rezende extends his filter system with worms to the infrastructure of the Jardim do Mira reforestation project. Sophia Regner continues to exhibit the joint exhibition and would like to stage the stories she experienced during the ResidenZ period in further pictures. Lisa Wendelboren and Thomas Bendt use water elements in their music and offer workshops with the Playtronica and the Touchme to get in touch with their own or other people's water through music.

The exhibition "Time for Water - see - hear - understand"
was the conclusion of ResidenZen 2023

The exhibition "Time for water" is also the conclusion of the three ResidenZen, which were designed as part of the prototype for a European residency program for land use.

The exhibition connects our senses. You will see a photographic staging of the use of fresh water, at a time when planetary boundaries are being crossed, by Sophia Katharina Regner. Two works were created in Portugal and in Rothenklempenow. David Rezende will be present with his presentation and a replica of a gray water filter, which he developed for an agroforestry project. His claim was that anyone can replicate it without much means. For the ears, there will be a half-hour sound piece "The circle" by music producers Lisa Wendelborn and Thomas Bendt, which was recorded using only water or drought from Portugal and Rothenklempenow. They used a special measuring device to incorporate the resonances of water into the piece via electrical currents. The exhibition was shown in Rothenklempenow until 26.10.2023 and has already made its first trip to Museum Night in Cologne. Here it was shown at the ecosign Academy of Design.

We have found you: Our residents June 2023

The jury has decided! Of the applications, two in particular were suitable for the Rothenklempenow site. Not agricultural-hydro or other ecological orientations as sought, but artists. But this does not detract from the matter. In the end, the jury decided to approve both applications and to award the ResidenZ to a couple from the village and a candidate from Cologne, thus shortening it accordingly.

THE JURY
Heike von Schilling (Naturpark am Stettiner Haff), Heike Kühner (Höfegemeinschaft Pommern), Nancy Wolf (Rewilding Oder Delta), Heike Fulbrecht (Förder und Entwicklungsgesellschaft MV), Raphael Riese (Arbeit und Leben MV), Uta Zahn (RCE Stettiner Haff), Susanne Völlm (Nave Randow e.V.)

THE RESIDENTS 2023

Sophia Regner, an artist and sustainable designer, wants to use her two months in Rothenklempenow to approach the topic of water scarcity in a creative way. With the participation of the local people and landscape, the aim is to create photographic productions that encourage people to engage emotionally and intellectually with the problem.

Lisa Wendelborn and Thomas Bendt have been living in Rothenklempenow for years and would also like to artistically implement the theme of water and drought in their residence. In their case, the focus will be on sound. What does drought sound like? How does water influence the soundscape in our landscapes and what stories can be told with it?

David Rezende, is a trained permaculture expert, who has made it his theme how to establish a sensible water system with gray water filter in a eucalyptus forest in the Jardim do Mira project, taking into account being in the Alentejo Natural Park.

The successful application will be determined by a jury that includes members of the RCE as well as the practice partners(Pomeranian Farm Community, Rewidling Oder Delta, Rothenklempenow Nature Park on the Szczecin Lagoon).

You can apply with any idea, big or small!
Here are a few topics from our partners to inspire you:

1. solution approaches for agriculture: research / collect data from the farm regarding water consumption and management / water situation, set up new water management nursery / world field, trials on the world field

2. solutions for households, buildings: in the household and everyday life up to natural sewage treatment plant for the Weltacker house for gray water, rainwater management (collection, storage, use) - profitability and options for action

3. landscape/area planning: preparation of a test field with alternative water-conserving cultivation, test field on the subject of micro-water cycles and increasing field capacity - including topics such as "planting water" / agroforestry / keyline / humus build-up / carbon incorporation / etc., alternative irrigation techniques

About the location:
Our educational and development site Weltacker Rothenklempenow was established on an area that was previously not used for agriculture and therefore has very poor soil in places. Every year we try different methods to improve it. How can we retain water, store it for longer, irrigate more efficiently or implement other practices, how can we better understand the water system?

Videos on the background and development of the Time for Future program:
It all started with the question of how we can tackle the pressing challenges and activate people to develop solutions for the regions together.
The residenZukunft pilot was made possible by the Neulandgewinner program and received the International RCE Award for Education for Sustainable Development in 2021.
Here is the clip about the pilot. The Tageschau also reported on the pilot. Then came the laying of the foundation stone for the construction of the Weltacker Haus, which was initiated by the Bauen residency, followed by the topping-out ceremony at the Mexico-Vorpommern Festival and finally the completion of the three residencies on 29.09.2021. In 2022, the exchange with the Portuguese partner started, about challenges in land use "Time for Future" and the further development of the idea of giving people time. This was followed by a village residency by the Kulturlandbüro, which published the book "die Unebekannten" (The Unknown) about stories of Rothenklempenow women in 2023. Now we want to bring a residence on water into the exchange with the Portuguese and German partners.

Time for the future follows the rhythm of nature
freely adapted from Audrey Fillon

ResidenZ types
During the development process, various ideas came up on how to empower people to take care of their futures and the planet.
We have learned that a ResidenZ could be very different depending on the topic. Depending on the situation, sometimes it only takes a month, or three years, for example for field studies. Full remuneration or just project money. For the "Time for Water - Prototypes" we have again advertised open to all ages, but it is mainly young people who can completely adjust their life situation to a new place and immerse themselves for a few months.

A. Entrepeneur in residency (entrepeneurs helping projects to get real, matching with places needing them)
B. Professionals in residency (hydrologist in residency helping a region by heart, matching with places needing them)
C. Employee in residency (15% working time for everybody for wellbeeing/SDG's, paid by state, proofed by peer to peer princible)
D. Youth in residency ( 4 to 24 Month residencies depending on their project ideas, incl. educational modules, deep dive in a place/region, paid basic income, mentorship and project budget, connected with authorities and people in a place)

Potential partners/locations
We have been able to identify various locations and competence partners in Germany and Portugal that would be interested in and have a need for such a program. Netzwerk Zukunftsorte, Neulandgewinnen, Wasserwerk der Zukunft, BioBoden Genossenschaft, Global Eco Villages. We were able to bring together more than 30 project makers in Portugal for a Regenerative Odemira, of which more than 8 would be suitable for a ResidenZ program. Through further research, we have found potential partners in Greece (Mani), France (Dordogne), Poland (Szczecin region) and Ireland. The RCE YOUTH network for Europe is also an exciting candidate for further discussions. Talks are still pending here. Otherwise, the EU Climate Pact Ambassadors are also an exciting network for such a program.
We were also able to identify existing similar programs. BeVisioneers, Global Landscape Forum Stewartship, ChangemakerXchange, PlanetaryService, European Solidarity Corps.

Financing options
We have considered and calculated various options for the two locations with our partners.

A ResidenZ Accelerator program could be made possible with approx. 340,000€/year at 3 locations in Europe, each with 3 ResidenZen for one year, incl. mentoring package and Changemaker Academy.

In addition to foundations or, in some cases, public funding, we have identified the European Solidarity Corps as a suitable option. Here we see a good opportunity to combine the idea of the "Time for Future - Program". We will find out exactly how this can work in further dialog. Dialogues and discussions with the MV Ministry of Agriculture, including via partners such as "landlebtdoch", are considering a ResidenZ program at several locations in MV. However, given the current funding situation, it remains to be seen to what extent "Time for the Future" can be implemented.
At the same time, a draft of a "concept note" was created, which sees "Time for Future" as a platform and accelerator. It is now up to the partners and stakeholders to decide where this project and the ideas will develop or connect.

With time for the future in future places, resilient landscapes and a diverse, strong Europe can emerge! From below, made regionally and thought globally - close, loving, mindful and caring!
