Pilot Pathway Rewilding Process (2024)

In a synthesis process of all work packages of the REWILD_DE project (see below), a pilot project, the so-called
pilot project, the so-called Rewilding Pathways Pilot (hereinafter "Pilot"),
at local level, esp. in the municipality Rothenklempenow in the district of
Vorpommern-Greifswald, the possibilities the practical realization of
rewilding measures and their actual realization supported
realization. Any knowledge requirements that arise and prove to be necessary for this process
necessary for this process but cannot be provided within the scope of the project's work packages
are supplemented by feasibility study(ies) in a process-oriented manner.
The project team will develop and carry out a process for the implementation of the pilot.
carried out, in in which initially a broad understanding and a common
approach developed and then in detailed considerations concrete
implementation perspectives are developed. This is done with the aim of "rewilding"
in the cultural landscape, i.e. to support natural processes that shape diverse
diverse landscapes and to regenerate and restore disturbed ecosystems.
severely damaged landscapes restore severely damaged landscapes, without thereby abandoning
agricultural use.

The Pathway Pilot Project is a subproject REWILD_DE Project

Since November 2021, the research project funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research
(BMBF) funded research project "REWILD_DE - Conservation of Biodiversity and
valorization of ecosystem services through rewilding - learning from the Oder Delta"
was carried out. Scientists and practitioners are working together as part of the
the potential of "rewilding" as a new type of nature conservation concept for restoring
conservation concept for the restoration of biodiversity and the
promotion a nature based economic development of the model area
Oder Delta in Western Pomerania. In addition in addition investigate they, to what extent the
experience and results gained can be transferred to supra-regional biodiversity conservation.
transferable are transferable. Coordinated is the project at the Helmholtz Center for
Environmental Research (UFZ), project partners are the German Center for Integrative
Biodiversity Research (iDiv) and the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg
(MLU), the Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development (HNEE) and the
Association Rewilding Oder Delta e. V. (ROD) as a practical partner in the study area.

The results of the project were presented at the REWILD_DE conference on 26/27.06.2024.

With over 100 participants, the main aim of the conference was to discuss the application of the rewilding approach in cultural landscapes and to highlight the ecological, economic and social opportunities and obstacles to rewilding in Germany. To this end, representatives of the Global Rewilding Alliance, Rewilding Europe and the German rewilding model area "Oder Delta" reported on rewilding practice. On the other hand, spaces for exchange were offered in the form of small group workshops on the following three topics and questions:

  • Rewilding between policies and local reality: How could rewilding approaches be taken into account in policy instruments?
  • People made rewilding landscapes: What role could participatory and artistic formats play in creating an awareness of the naturalness of landscapes?
  • The economy of rewilding: What new forms of economic activity have emerged in rewilding landscapes?

The conference "REWILDING - A perspective for more nature and regional development" took place as part of the research project "REWILD_DE - Conservation of biodiversity and valorization of ecosystem services through rewilding - learning from the Oder Delta", which was funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

The conference brought together nature conservation practitioners and was aimed at representativesof local authorities, nature conservation administrations, associations and initiatives, as well as interested scientists.

A lot of joint work was published at the Rothenklempenow site:

Over the past two years, we have developed landscape scenarios for 2035 together with the stakeholders in Rothenklempenow. These were summarized in a brochure and presented and published at the conference. The response was extremely positive, and the holistic approach of looking at entire landscapes and developing comprehensive overall concepts was particularly well received.

As a regional partner of the Pathway Rewilding sub-project, the RCE Stettiner Haff ensured that the region was involved. Jochen Elberskirch (Nature Park Manager), Heike Kühner (Pomeranian Farmers' Association) and Uwe Greff (BioBoden Genossenschaft) from RCE Stettiner Haff were involved, as was board member and contributor Tobias Till Keye (Project N - Agency for Sustainable Development). The borough brochure was illustrated and developed by Co-Land
